Cowl & Turnsignal Removal

As you can see from the from the drawing above (tickle it for a larger view), the K1200RS fairing is composed of about a dozen different pieces. I'm assuming you want to remove enough of them to perform routine maintenance, so we'll be taking everything off except the pieces that surround the headlight and the front fender.

Start with the lower cowling. Remove the six screws (three each side) at the lower edge of the fairing side panels.

Remove the upper screws in the front of the cowling, left and right:

Also remove the screw on the upper flange of the left side (pink arrow in photo). Finally, lay on your back and remove the two screws on the bottom of the cowl. The cowl should drop free of the bike at this point, but you may have to wiggle it to clear the front and sides of the fairing panels. The last two screws have both plain washers and shouldered washers under them, so pay attention how these come out so you can put them back together in the correct order.

Remove the turnsignal pods next. The pods are held on by steel spring fingers that slide over a bayonet stud on the fairing bracket. A small steel ring encircles the end of the fingers. The ideal way to remove the pod would be to pull straight out, but it is almost impossible to grab and pull hard enough to do this. Instead, support the pod from underneath and strike the outboard end with your hand in a direction toward the back of the bike and a little bit down. That should dislodge the top mount. Grasp the pod with both hands and pull out and it should come off the remaining two mounts. The turn signal wire should be disconnected next. Grasp the plug on both sides and squeeze, then pull away from the socket to separate. Set the turnsignal pods aside in a safe place.
